Spontaneous Fugue

After the airtight con of “Knurled Spanner,” this is the album exhaling, and the shift in register does it good. The title promises something knottier than what lands, and that gap is the story of this one: an art-rock brief built on shifting meters and clipped sax multiphonics that resolves, in the audio, into a bright and propulsive E-major push at a mid-tempo clip. What survives the translation is Rose’s gift for the small confessional image. The best verse puts you on the commute directly: ‘On the 6:12 with my bag half-zipped / Listening to the brakes sigh at the stop,’ and that sighing brake does more work than any angular riff could. The chorus turns on a nice piece of self-permission, ‘If it’s a detour, let it be / I’m moving, I’m moving,’ and the guitar solo near the four-minute mark gives the final chorus a genuine lift, the same forward tilt Rose reached for on ‘Nowhere But Up.’ It doesn’t earn its experimental framing so much as sidestep it into a clean, hook-forward anthem, and the ‘rearranging the furniture’ verse leans a touch on the nose next to that train-window sharpness. Placed here, it’s the steadying breath before the satire tightens its grip again; the writing keeps its footing and the momentum never sags. A dependable cut that does its job and does it well.

Lyrics

Every day I catch myself Is it me that is following Or am I in step with my own tune At my own pace Aligned with the cosmos Defining the course And not standing still Please tell me I'm flying Even if it's wandering If it's a detour, let it be I'm moving, I'm moving No map, no name, still it's me Still it's me choosing Every day I catch myself Am I building something new Or just rearranging the furniture In a room I know too well Trying to find a fresh view From the same four four walls Hoping for a breakthrough Please tell me I'm flying Even if it's wandering If it's a detour, let it be I'm moving, I'm moving No map, no name, still it's me Still it's me choosing Every day I catch myself On the 6:12 with my bag half-zipped Listening to the brakes sigh at the stop Checking my reflection in the dark window Still wondering if I chose this route Or if the route chose me Either way, I'm moving Please tell me I'm flying Even if it's wandering If it's a detour, let it be I'm moving, I'm moving No map, no name, still it's me Still it's me choosing Maybe the map is all a rumor Maybe I’m learning as I go One hand on the rail, one on the hour Let it shift, let it show If it's a detour, let it be I'm moving, I'm moving No map, no name, still it's me Still it's me choosing
