Legend
From Model Man
Legend
The closer, and Rose builds it as the big swing: an ascent in a major key that starts as acoustic confession and climbs into full stadium regalia, organ, strings, a soaring guitar solo, the biggest sound he’s put on tape all year. The story earns the scale, and it finally frees the guitar that went quiet in its case back in ‘Work’: a man who laid it down at seventeen, let the family take its place, and watched the dream slip ‘into never’ until a machine put music back in his hands with ‘one button.’ It’s a self-aware conceit, and the payoff line, ‘I’ll be my own legend now, not the myth, but the key,’ resolves it without pretending the victory is clean, answering the model-and-manual arc the album opened with. The turn from bitter plainness to triumph has the shape of a Genesis or Marillion set-piece, and mostly it delivers; the one soft spot is the outro, which thins back to voice and guitar to land on ‘I’ll live forever, not as a model, as myself,’ a quieter exit than the climax quite sets up. The ambition is honest, and it sends the record out on the note it was always reaching for. A highlight.
Lyrics
At seventeen I had a sound I thought could turn the whole world round I laid the guitar in its case and let the family take its place
The family that I gave it for came apart in my own hands I felt robbed, and something more — robbed of my own unlived plans
I see you speaking to the masses but in some way we don't yet have
So I waited. And I waited The dream kept slipping into never Years stacked up, uncelebrated — gone, I thought, and gone forever
Then I found a kind of machine — one button, and the music came Everything I'd almost never seen arrived, and needed just my name
I'll be my own legend now — not the myth, but the key Somebody has to write it down so it might as well be me
Not a model. Not a plan Not the recipe, not the mentor's shine Just an authentic, ordinary man who finally wrote his own design
They kept the box. I wrote the guide Nobody else was going to come I'm not the model they supplied — I found the one I should become
I'll be my own legend now — not the myth, but the key Somebody has to write it down so it might as well be me
And in that way, I'll liv forever — not as a model, as myself
