All Fall Down

From Model Man

All Fall Down

Late in the record, the model metaphor comes home to the body, and the trick here is the diagnosis reframed as a lyric: a doctor who checks “the numbers on the stack” and shrugs “maybe you’re just getting older,” and Rose turning twenty years of misfiling into a slow reveal. The line that pays it off, “turns out the model had a faulty part,” lands because he’s kept the delivery clinical up to that point, plain baritone over piano and organ, no reach for pity. Then the nursery rhyme returns, “ring around the rosy” flipped from the plague-sick unease of ‘Recipe’ into acceptance, and the chorus arrives at “not broken. Just built this way,” which is the whole record’s argument in six words. It runs at a brisk clip in a major key, and the build from hushed verse to full-ensemble chorus is more stadium than the material strictly needs; the guitar solo late is the one place grace tips toward grandeur. Reminds me of Warren Zevon staring down his own body without blinking. A highlight, and it holds the room.

Lyrics

I told a doctor, twenty years back something wasn't right in me She checked the numbers on the stack and said, "That's just what age will be."

Maybe you're just getting older

No manual for growing old — I filled the blank pages myself called it tired, called it a cold and put the question on a shelf

The decline got harder to deny A year of pokes, and prods, and shocks Test after test asked me why — and none of them had stopped the clock

Not age. Not tired. Not a cold Something I'd had since before the start A man is a model, I'd been told — turns out the model had a faulty part

My hands that gave out on a box I should have lifted The race I dropped before the turn The fence I couldn't clear Not failure A name I hadn't learned yet

Ring around the rosy pocket full of posies ashes, ashes we all fall down

We all fall down and somehow, it's still perfect We all fall down — not broken. Just built this way

We all fall down and somehow, it's still perfect We all fall down — not broken. Just built this way

Ashes, ashes We all fall down Somehow, this too — somehow, this too
